Is tiling windows and saving screen space not largely the same thing, being able to to see the most of your window's content without excess clutter? I use tiling wm's for precicely this reason, and even if you came to it for another reason, the goals seem at least largely congruent, and this is why I have never understood the popularity of gaps, it seems counterproductive. I was thinking of asking almost an identical question to OP, and your answer comes closest to answering me, so please don't take this as arguing, I want to understand your perspective. So with the right background and the right trans you can find some sweet spot between usability and rice Idk if that makes any sense but I use some super one colored background in shades of darker grey and I have no trouble reading in the terminal. So idk, I mean if you want a background but still want to see through the terminal that's the option imo, if you can't stand the background because it's too noisy then it's simply better without right? While using i3gaps with transparent terminal windows for example it can look really good if you have a one colored, very smooth and low contrast background, if the background is too noisy its hard to see the text in the terminal.

that's why most windows backgrounds and definitely the default ones are very simple and one colored. If you used windows you may know you don't want a background with to much detailed noise because then it becomes very hard to find the program shortcuts on the desktop.
